Science is a core subject in the National Curriculum. It is a discipline full of skills that are applicable across the curriculum. On this page, you can read how Science is prioritised at St. Mary's; simply click the links below.

The 'End points' document sets out the key pieces of knowledge and skills in Science that we expect the children to know, as they progress through their curriculum. End points are used to assess a child's progress and attainment, at key stages of their development; and to identify the child's next steps in learning.

Science Curriculum

At St Mary's we teach Science the National Curriculum Science objectives in ways that are imaginative purposeful, well-controlled and enjoyable. Where possible we create meaningful links to other areas of the curriculum. We enable children to become effective communicators of scientific ideas, facts and data. Building on children's natural curiosity, we encourage them to question the world.

Working Scientifically

Running alongside the knowledge that children learn, we engage students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning that fosters curiosity and critical thinking. Pupils explore scientific concepts through observation, experimentation, and analysis, developing skills such as making predictions, gathering evidence, and drawing conclusions. This ensures that children not only grasp the content but also learn how to think and work like scientists.

Visits and Trips

To enhance our curriculum, at St Mary's we use visits and trips to utilise experts in different areas. These experiences give pupils the opportunity to explore new environments, engage with experts and witness concepts in action. Recent examples include Chemisty with Cabbage in Year 6, Electricity Workshop in Year 4, a visit to Ness Gardens to learn about wildlife and a visit to the Catalyst Museum for Year 5.

Science Week

Each Year, we host a really fun week where the children are immersed in science! This year the theme was 'Time' and children took part in a wide variety of activities linked to this. In Early Years, they investigated how long ice-lollies would take to melt; Year 5 used Scratch to create time-travelling machines and Year 4 planned an experiment into the age-old question of whether time really flies when you are having fun. Year 1 even attempted to answer the question of whether boys or girls are faster!

Science Fair

To crown Science Week, we hosted a whole-school Science Fair where children were encouraged to take part in experiments at home and then bring them in to demonstrate. We had over 60 entries and they were an incredible standard! At the end of the week, we crowned the winners but every child could be proud of their efforts.
