Year 3 2024 - 2025

Miss Breen

Spring Term 2025

Happy new year and welcome to our Year 3 class page! This page will provide you with the information you need about what your child is currently learning in school.

My name is Mrs Pearce, and I will be your child’s teacher this year; we will also have other adults in class, like Miss Bridgeman, who will help us with our learning What a fantastic first term we have had together in Year 3! Well done for all of your hard work! This term we have lots of exciting learning opportunities planned, including a trip to Chester Museum for their Roman Experience.

English

In English, we will be using two main texts to enhance the features of our writing and they are ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit and ‘Nen and the Lonely Fisherman’ by Ian Eagleton.

We will use Escape from Pompeii as a foundation to produce several pieces of writing, including: a diary entry, a recount, a letter and a narrative. This fiction text based on the historical event of Mount Vesuvius erupting over Pompeii will increase the children’s understanding of life during the Romans occupation and will fit nicely with our current history topic. Nen and the Lonely Fisherman will increase the children’s understanding of our modern world and will encourage discussions around friendships and relationships. It will also enable many more opportunities to produce some independent writing, including: a diary entry, a set of instructions and some poetry.

Our class novels for this term are Cool by Michael Morpurgo and Max and the Millions by Ross Montgomery.

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to work on our arithmetic skills and four operations. This term we will be focusing on multiplication and division, money, length and perimeter and fractions, including problem-solving and investigative maths.

RE

Our RE unit will be centred around Galilee to Jerusalem and after the half-term, Desert to Garden. We will be increasing our understanding of the Kingdom of God and Jesus’ miracles. Next half-term, we will be discussing The Last Supper and the importance of receiving Jesus through Communion. This term will also mark the start of our class preparations for making our First Forgiveness and receiving First Holy Communion.

Topic

Our topic for Spring Term is ‘Roman Britain’. We will be exploring what life was like during Roman Britain, how the Roman Empire expanded and different formations which the Roman army used during battle. We will have many cross-curricular experiences such as our trip to the DEVA Museum in Chester, creating Roman mosaics during Forest School and designing, making and evaluating a Roman coin or shield during our DT lessons.

Science

Our science topics for this term include ‘Animals including Humans’ and ‘Magnets and Forces’ – both of which provide many opportunities for cross-curricular learning with our Roman Britain topic and Length and Perimeter within our maths work.

Homework in Year 3

At home, there are many different ways in which you can support your child with their learning. Daily reading continues to be an expectation for all children and this should be logged in their school planner each time. Children are also expected to have regular access to apps such as TTRS and EdShed to support their times tables and spelling.

All homework, including personalised spellings, will be set on a Friday. Children will write their spellings in their school planner and these will also be uploaded onto Google Classroom. Children will have a week of learning their spellings both in school and at home before a spelling test the following Friday. Homework pertinent to learning which has taken place in class that week will also be available on Google Classroom.

PE Days

Our PE days this term are Tuesday and Friday, so please come to school dressed in your PE kit on these days.

Forest School

Unless otherwise stated, our Year 3 Forest School dates for this year are as follows:

Thursday 6th February

Thursday 3rd April

Thursday 12th June

Please ensure that your child comes to school on these days dressed accordingly to the weather forecast and in old clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty.  During the winter months, it will be imperative that the children are wrapped up with multiple layers.
