Year 3 2024 - 2025
Miss Breen
Autumn Term 2024
Hello and welcome to our Year 3 class page! This page will provide you with the information you need about what your child is currently learning in school.
My name is Mrs Pearce, and I will be your child’s teacher this year; we will also have other adults in class, like Miss Bridgeman, who will help us with our learning.
English
In English, we will be using two main texts to enhance the features of our writing and they are ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura and ‘Coming to England’ by Floella Benjamin. We will use Stone Age Boy as a foundation to produce several pieces of writing, including: a diary entry, instructions, a narrative and a non-chronological report. The true story Coming to England written by Dame Floella Benjamin will increase the children’s understanding of the Windrush Generation and enable many more opportunities to produce some independent writing, including: a recount, a diary entry, a leaflet and many letters.
Our class novels for this term are Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl and A Night at the Frost Fair by Emma Carroll.
Maths
In Maths, we will begin by focusing on basic skills, including place value – where we will embed our knowledge from Year 2, of numbers up to 100 and move onto working with numbers up to 1,000. Once we are secure with this skill, we will move on to develop our understanding of the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
RE
Our RE unit will be centred around Creation and Covenant and after the half-term, Prophecy and Promise. We will be increasing our understanding of Creation and God as the Creator of the Universe, along with stewardship and what we can do to show care for God’s world.
Topic
Our topic for Autumn Term is ‘Stone Age to Iron Age’. We will be exploring what life was like during the Stone Age and how technological advances enabled the Iron Age. We will have many cross-curricular experiences such as visiting a roundhouse at Beeston, creating hunting equipment during Forest School and designing, making and evaluating a clay pot in DT.
Science
Our science topics for this term include ‘Light and Shadow’ and ‘Rocks and Soils’ – both of which provide many opportunities for cross-curricular learning with our Stone Age to Iron Age topic. We will take part in an exciting workshop led by Chester Cathedral linking together science and faith called Amazing Light.
Homework in Year 3
At home, there are many different ways in which you can support your child with their learning. Daily reading continues to be an expectation for all children and this should be logged in their school planner each time. Children are also expected to have regular access to apps such as TTRS and EdShed to support their times tables and spelling.
All homework, including personalised spellings, will be set on a Friday. Children will write their spellings in their school planner and these will also be uploaded onto Google Classroom. Children will have a week of learning their spellings both in school and at home before a spelling test the following Friday. Homework pertinent to learning which has taken place in class that week will also be available on Google Classroom.
PE Days
Our PE days this term are Tuesday and Friday, so please come to school dressed in your PE kit on these days.
Forest School
Unless otherwise stated, our Year 3 Forest School dates for this year are as follows:
Thursday 3rd October
Thursday 28th November
Thursday 6th February
Thursday 3rd April
Thursday 19th June
Please ensure that your child comes to school on these days dressed accordingly to the weather forecast and in old clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty. During the winter months, it will be imperative that the children are wrapped up with multiple layers.
