Year 5. 2018 - 2019

Miss Pugh

Welcome to Year 5!

Autumn Term

Well done for an excellent start to the new academic year! We are now into the second half of Autumn Term , working towards Christmas! You are all working so hard-keep it up!

During the term ahead, our topic will be North America. We will be learning things about the countries, climates and geographical features. We will also be looking at some of the wonders of North America!

In English, we will be looking at a range of texts including Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg and The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy. We will enhance already taught skills and introduce new writing skills to add to our ‘writer’s toolkits’.

Our Maths learning begins this term with a Place Value focus before moving on to look at the use of the four operations (additon, subtraction, multiplication and division). Our focus will again be teaching for mastery using concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to learning to secure fluency and reasoning skills.

Religious Education

In RE this term we will be exploring Creation, reflecting on the importance of this story and looking at God's great gifts to us. In the second half of the term we look at God's Covenants, understanding the meaning of covenant, looking at Noah, Abraham and Moses. Both topics will offer children opportunities to reflect on the teaching of our Church and how we are each called to respond to the challenges in our society today.

At home there are many different ways in which you can support your child with their learning this year. Each week, the homework books will have details of reinforcement activities that can be completed in the CGP revision books. There are also the Mathletics and Times Table Rockstars apps that the children are warmly invited to use as regularly as possible. Children should also continue to read every night and to have their reading logged in their reading record each time.

Open invitation

You are always welcome to chat with myself after school, or to make an appointment.

As always, thank you for your continued support.
